History of Hong Kong University

Governor Sir Frederick Lugard has proposed establishing a university in Hong Kong to compete with universities in China. The Hong Kong government and businesses in southern China, both eager to learn the “secrets of Western success”, also provided support. Charles Eliot was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor.

As Governor of Hong Kong, Lugard laid the foundation stone of the main building on 16 March 1910 and hoped that the university would educate more Chinese in England with “imperial values”, as opposed to other Western countries. The University of Hong Kong was officially opened on October 11, 1912. The university was originally established as a male-only institution. The first female student was accepted ten years later.
