About Chulalongkorn University

Founded in 1917, Chulalongkorn University is the first and oldest university in Thailand. As the name implies, this university was formed on the basis of the thoughts of King Chulalongkorn who at that time wanted to strengthen the government to avoid the influence of colonialism. One of the efforts made is to advance the education system so that it can produce competent human resources. King Chulalongkorn also upholds the principle that all levels of society have equal opportunities to gain access to education. Now Chulalongkorn University has grown to become the number 1 university in Thailand and is ranked 36th in the 2022 QS Asian University Ranking and 224th in the 2023 QS World University Ranking. 2019.

Chulalongkorn University’s Graduate Scholarship Programme for ASEAN or Non-ASEAN Countries

This scholarship for postgraduate students provides facilities in the form of return flight tickets, tuition fees, as well as monthly allowances and accommodation.

Chulalongkorn University Overseas Students Scholarship

Aimed at Masters and Doctoral students, the scholarship provides PP airplane ticket facilities (specifically for ASEAN countries), tuition fees, other academic fees, living expenses, and living accommodation

Teaching/Research Assistant Scholarship

Especially for postgraduate students who are assigned to be teaching assistants or practicum assistants, they will receive an allowance of 7,000 baht/month for Masters and 9,000 baht/month for Doctoral. In addition to the scholarships above, there are also various undergraduate scholarships offered by each faculty at Chulalongkorn University. Living expenses needed to study in Thailand

Broadly speaking, the costs that must be spent to continue their education in Thailand depend on the university, study program, and level of education chosen. Nonetheless, the cost of higher education in Thailand is usually much cheaper than the cost of education in western countries. 

For international students at the undergraduate level, the average tuition fee to be paid in Thailand is usually around US$17,000 – US$28,000 and for international students at the postgraduate level, the tuition fees that must be spent can range from US$8,000 to US$16,000.

In addition to tuition fees, international students also need to take into account the living expenses needed while studying in Thailand, such as the cost of food and drink, transportation and accommodation in Thailand. Generally, international students have to spend around US$600-US$1200 per month to cover living expenses in Thailand. 

Of course, the amount of living expenses required for international students to study in Thailand is heavily influenced by the location of the place of study, lifestyle, and various other necessities of life.   

Higher education system in Thailand

The higher education system in Thailand offers various study programs through approximately 156 higher education institutions which are divided into several categories including:

  1. University
  2. Institutes of Technology/Rajamangala Institutes
  3. Vocational and Technical Colleges
  4. Teacher Colleges/Rajabhat Institutes
  5. Professional Colleges  for certain fields of study such as nursing, military and police academies.

The higher education qualifications offered in Thailand also vary, as has been divided in  the National Qualifications Framework for Higher Education in Thailand. These qualifications include: 

  1. Advanced Diploma
    Designed for the development of knowledge and skills needed in the world of work, especially for administrative or professional fields.
  2. Bachelor
    Designed to develop a comprehensive understanding of a field of study.
  3. Graduate Diploma
    Designed for students who wish to pursue further studies academically or professionally at a higher level than the bachelor’s degree, but cannot meet the requirements set for the master’s level or for students who are not interested in carrying out research or projects required for the master’s  level  .  
  4. Master
    Designed to develop knowledge and skills both academically and professionally at an advanced level higher than the bachelor’s level.  
  5. Higher Graduate Diploma
    Designed as an advanced professional qualification given for certain fields of study that require professional training at the level between Masters and Doctoral. Generally, this qualification is given to fields of study such as  medicine, pharmacy  and others.
  6. Doctor
    Designed as the highest qualification which involves processes of creating, interpreting and implementing knowledge carried out to develop a scientific discipline.   

The language spoken in Thailand
